IBM Canada Ltd.'s recent announcement that it's looking for 500-plus new employees in the Toronto area created a predictable stir in the city's IT community.

Information about the spate of hirings was made available through local media outlets, as IBM put out the call for qualified IT professionals with at least five years' experience.

The upshot of this was more than 5,000 candidates flooded into IBM's Markham, Ont.-basedoffices this month, vying for spots with salaries of $75,000 to $150,000 annually.

"We expected 3,000, but because of the overwhelming media coverage, we got a lot of walk-ins," said Terry Whittam, manager of human resources, technology and staffing for IBM Canada.

"It did get crowded, there's no two ways about it. But we had a very positive reaction from the attendees."

Once inside IBM's complex, the job hunters were received by approximately 50 greeters, then were moved into one of seven auditorium presentations.

From there, they could attend smaller sessions in groups of 30 to 40 and finally, visit 30 different booths representing various business units, where they could speak one-on-one with hiring managers.

There were no on-the-spot hires to Whittam's knowledge, though he admitted anything was possible given the sheer number of people involved. He did confirm that longer interviews had been scheduled for 400 applicants.

Whittam said the massive recruitment drive was necessary in light of considerable and continued growth of IBM's Global Services division and in its Toronto R&D lab, which recently added a new wing and will relocate to another Toronto location next year.

About 60 per cent of the new hires will go into Global Services, which is looking to fill spots for principals, consultants, project managers and IT architects and specialists.

The new hires will mainly tackle -commerce initiatives.

The Toronto lab has positions available for applicants with development, database and Java programming skills, among others.

IBM is focusing its job drive in the Toronto area, but there are positions available in Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver.

Last year, IBM Canada hired 2,099 employees across the country.

The new additions will push the company's total workforce to more than 18,000.
